Optimization of the Borealis ™ and Concordia ™ sub-constellations of the ELLIPSO ™ personal communications system
The ELLIPSO ™ Personal Communication System is being developed to provide affordable personal telephonic and data communications using hand-held (cellular-type) terminals through a unique constellation that includes both elliptical and circular communications satellites. The use of elliptical orbits permits the biasing of earth coverage by latitude, longitude and time of day so that satellite coverage can be matched to the market needs for particular geographical regions and their populations' daily work schedules. The evolution of the system's constellation concept is described, showing that continuing improvements in performance and cost can be obtained through refinements of the orbital arrays themselves. Additionally, more efficient methods for the insertion, phasing and station-keeping of multiple satellites are being developed that will further lower the costs and shorten the time schedules for constellation establishment Although the design of elliptical constellations is considerably more difficult than the design of circular (i.e., Walker, or Beste type systems), the many advantages justify the extra design effort The design of the ELLIPSO ™ system's constellation is viewed as a major technological advance in the field of non-GEO communications satellite systems, and clearly superior to other Big-LEO circular orbit Systems.
