The probability of specified changes in orbit integrals as a result of an approach in a plane gravitating system
Abstract
A function giving the probability of a close approach with a field star with specified changes in the energy and angular momentum integrals is derived for a star of arbitrary mass in a plane medium. In the case of weak interactions, this function is proportional to (delta v)^2, where delta v is the change of the star's velocity as a result of the approach. Multiplying the resulting function by the multiplicity coefficient for distant approaches ensures convergence of the collision integral in a plane medium.
