Determination of Γ for the Ep = 223 keV Resonance in the ^24Mg(p,γ)^25Al Reaction
Abstract
Isotopic anomalies (C, O, N, Na, Al, and Mg) observed on the surface of Globular Cluster Red Giant Branch stars are thought to be the result of mixing of material from the envelope into regions of hydrogen burning. The production of Al requires knowledge of the ^24Mg(p,γ) reaction rate at T9 ~ 0.04 - 0.07, which in turn requires the determination of the total width, Γ, of the Ep = 223 keV resonance. Measurement of Γ_γ/Γ at TUNL was made by excitation of the Ep = 1616 keV resonance and detection of the γ-ray cascade through the corresponding compound nuclear state at Ex = 2485 keV. Furthermore, the strength, ωγ, of the Ep = 223 keV resonance was measured. The value for ωγ is determined by coupling the γ-ray yield to the intensity of elastically scattered protons. The experimental results will be presented and implications of our results for the reaction rate will be discussed.
