Pca/hexte Observations of Coma and A2319
Abstract
Measurements with the PCA and HEXTE can lead to an important new discovery: detection of diffuse high energy X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies. We propose observations of Coma and A2319, two clusters with known radio halos, which were also detected at energies around 30 keV by the HEAO-1 A4 experiment. A one-day observation in the broad PCA+HEXTE energy band will likely lead to clear identification of both the thermal and nonthermal spectral components. Detection of nonthermal emission from Coma and A2319 will pave the way for important investigations of their nonthermal properties. Such a detection will enable direct determination of the mean magnetic field and energy density of relativistic electrons in clusters based only on observables.
