Fast Timing of Z Sources
Abstract
With XTE, it will be possible for the first time to perform extended submillisecond timing studies of Z sources at count rates in the 10-100 kc/s range. We propose to do so, and to perform a number of different investigations of the two brightest Z sources, GX~5-1 and Sco~X-1 aimed at verifying the detailed predictions of, in particular, QPO properties that have been made on the basis of models derived from EXOSAT and Ginga observations. We will search for predicted new fast aperiodic variability components and millisecond pulsations, and apply advanced time-series analysis techniques to study the power spectral variations down to time scales of a few seconds.
