Magnetic overprints and their removal
Abstract
Procedures for removing magnetic overprints are analyzed. It is concluded that an overprint carried by single-domain grains cannot be removed by alternating field demagnetization without first removing the original remanance, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM). However if the coercive force spectra are sufficiently separate, it may still be possible to isolate the NRM as the first moment removed. The safest way to remove overprints is thermally, but this will require elevated temperatures.
