Duality of typeII 7branes and 8branes
Abstract
We present a version of tendimensional IIA supergravity containing a 9form potential for which the field equations are equivalent to those of the standard, massless, IIA theory for vanishing 10form field strength, F_{10}, and to those of the 'massive' IIA theory for nonvanishing F_{10}. We present a multi 8brane solution of these equations that generalizes the 8brane of Polchinski and Witten. We show that this solution is Tdual to a new multi 7brane solution of S^{1} compactified IIIB supergravity, and that the latter is Tdual to the IIA 6brane. When combined with the Sl(2; Z) Uduality of the typeIIB superstring, the Tduality between type11 7branes and 8branes implies a quantization of the cosmological constant of typeIIA superstring theory. These results are made possible by the construction of a new massiveN = 2 D = 9 supergravity theory. We also discuss the 11dimensional interpretation of these typeII pbranes.
