The problems and design principles of targets for the production of radioactive ions using various high intensity projectile beams are discussed. The thermal properties of the targets, including heat dissipation, diffusion and effusion, are covered. Particular reference is made to the high power RIST target which has been constructed for use with an 800 MeV proton beam at intensities of up to 100 μA.
