Crystal-aided non-resonant extraction of 70 GeV protons from the IHEP accelerator
Abstract
A bent Si crystal placed in front of the first septum-magnet of the existing slow extraction system of the IHEP accelerator has allowed additionally up to 3 × 10 8 protons to be extracted for physics experiments. These protons were otherwise lost on the septum in non-resonant slow extraction mode. They represent about 10-30% of the beam intensity extracted towards channel No. 22 without a bent crystal. The effect is due to volume channeling. The use of an unbent crystal as an amorphous target results in a decrease of the extracted beam intensity.
