Structural transformations in leached uranium dioxide
Abstract
The effects of water interaction with UO 2 single crystals (leaching) were studied by means of 7.53 MeV 4He-ion channeling. Upon leaching at temperatures above 150°C transformation of the surface layer into a higher oxide, namely β-U 3O 7, was observed. The lattice mismatch between the bulk crystal and the transformed layer produced important changes in the <110> axial channeling direction. Based on these data and Monte Carlo channeling simulations a model structure of the transformed layer was developed.
