PIXE setup for liquid sample analysis
Abstract
The PIXE system at the CTU in Prague has been adapted for analysis of liquid samples. The analysis is carried out in helium atmosphere with a vertical proton beam. The hardware design of the beam setup is outlined. Beam charge measurement based on the proton RBS on the exit window and its calibration are discussed. Tests of an organometallic oil standard speciment have been carried out and its stability during irradiation was examined; no essential changes were observed at low proton doses (up to about 10 μC) and current densities about 100 nA/cm 2. As an example, PIXE analysis of turbomolecular pump oil is described.
