A technique to determine the mean energy of energetic muons in multilayer detectors is developed. The mean energy is determined from the average value m of the small bursts, i.e. the average number of electrons and positrons generated in the detector by muons in the three basic processes: creation of e + e - pairs, δ-electrons, and bremsstrahlung. The accuracy of the method is discussed.
