Mechanisms of p-mode absorption by active regions
Abstract
Proposed mechanisms for explaining the observed absorption of p-mode waves by active regions are briefly reviewed. Absorption by conversion into downward propagating slow mode waves is identified as particularly promising. The observed dependence of absorption and scattering amplitudes on wavenumber allows in principle the determination of the field strength in active region and sunspot fields down to a depth of about 20000 km.
