Electron Spectroscopy Study of UCu_5-xPd_x
Abstract
As x increases from 0, UCu_5-xPdx loses its antiferromagnetism near x=1, develops non-Fermi liquid behavior for 1.5>x>1 and then enters a spin glass regime. Previous resonant photoemission (RESPES) studies(Y.X. Zhang et al, Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 39), 131(1994). of the electronic structure for samples with x=0,1,1.5,2 and 4 have been extended to include laboratory X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (XPS and UPS) and bremstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy (BIS). The new results are consistent with our RESPES findings for the near constancy of the Fermi energy EF and the basic valence band features. As x increases from 0 a sharp peak near E_F, and the low binding energy peak of the structured U 4f core XPS spectrum, decrease together. We have analyzed the 4f spectra within the impurity Anderson model and will discuss the implications of our results for the interesting properties of the material.
