The ISO Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) covers the range between 2.5 and 45mu m with a spectral resolution of either 1,000 to 2,500 (grating mode) or about 30,000 (Fabry-Perot mode). The first results will be presented from the SWS scientific programme investigating the physical and chemical conditions in planetary atmospheres, circumstellar material, planetary nebulae, and galaxies.
