New amplitude equation for Boussinesq convection and nonequilateral hexagonal patterns
Abstract
We derive envelope equations for hexagonal patterns containing new non-gradient quadratic terms that include spatial derivatives. Unlike conventional quadratic terms supporting perfect equilateral hexagonal patterns, the new terms can produce non-equilateral hexagonal patterns based on a resonant triad of wavevectors with slightly different lengths. Possible connections with experiments are discussed.
