Inversion of a 1000-KM Ocean Acoustic Experiment for Baroclinic Tides.
Abstract
In the Summer of 1989 a 1000-km acoustic experiment in the Pacific showed a 12-13 hour variation in pulse travel time that was coherent in depth and varied systematically across timefronts. Internal-tide models composed of low -mode M2 internal tides were examined by ray tracing and were found to show the same characteristic variation. A search over incoming incoming direction of the internal tides suggests that the observed internal-tide signal was generated in the Gulf of Alaska. In the process of fitting our specific acoustic data we have developed an analysis technique for low-mode internal tides that can be applied generally to any acoustic experiment.
