Measurements of the (polarized Proton, Proton') and (polarized Proton, Proton'x) Reactions on Deuterium and HELIUM-3, 4 AT 200 Mev.
Abstract
Differential cross sections and analyzing powers have been concurrently measured for the inclusive (p, p^') reaction and the exclusive (p,px) reactions on ^2H and ^{3,4}He induced by 200 MeV polarized protons. A large solid angle array of NaI detectors was used as a second arm detector in coincidence with the K600 spectrometer. The primary protons were measured at three angles, 20^circ, 30 ^circ and 40^circ , in coincidence with secondary protons and deuterons at angles ranging from -29.5^ circ to -125.0^ circ in plane, and from -3.0 ^circ to 29.0^ circ normal to the reaction plane. Clear quasifree peaks were observed for the ^2H(p,p^') and ^{3,4}He(p,p ^') reactions. The measured differential cross sections agree well in shape with factorized distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations. The measured analyzing powers are in fair agreement with the DWIA calculations. In order to identify the direct contributions of (p,2p) and (p,pd) quasifree knockout reactions to the inclusive yield, the ^2H( vec p,2p) and ^{3,4} He(vec p,px) reactions were measured over a sufficiently large region of phase space, that we were able to reliably extrapolate and integrate the data and thus obtain the total yield for each reaction channel. We estimated the (p,p^') contribution to the inclusive (p,p^ ') reaction using DWIA calculations since the (p,pn) contribution was not measured in this experiment. We find that the continuum ^2H (p,p^') and ^ {3,4}He(p,p^') cross sections are dominated by the quasifree knockout reactions (>= ~73%). At the quasifree peak we reproduce the data to a level of 90-95%. For ^3He and ^4 He, the (p,pd) cluster knockout contribution to the continuum spectra is small (<=5%) except for the highest momentum bite (~ 125 MeV) at 40^circ where it is ~8%. Although the experimental (vec p,2p) analyzing powers agree fairly well with the DWIA calculations, the integrated analyzing powers with an estimated neutron contribution included are larger than the inclusive (vec p,p^') analyzing powers. Indeed the inclusive (vec p,p^ ') analyzing powers agree best with the integration including only a (vec p,2p) contribution. Thus it appears that the neutron analyzing powers are considerably suppressed in ^2 H and ^{3,4}He.
