Measurement of the Muon Neutrino on Carbon Cross Section Near Threshold.
Abstract
The reaction rm C(nu_ mu, mu^{-})rm X has been studied for neutrino energies from threshold at 123 MeV to 240 MeV using the Liquid Scintillation Neutrino Detector (LSND) at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), after two years of data. The flux averaged cross section and the visible energy spectrum of such events are presented. The cross section of this weak process is found to be smaller than several theoretical estimates. Also, cross section measurements of the exclusive rm C(nu_mu, mu^{-}) ^{12}rm N(gs) and the rm p(=nu_mu, mu^ {+})rm n reactions are reported.
