Retardation and relativity: Derivation of Lorentz-Einstein transformations from retarded integrals for electric and magnetic fields
Abstract
Lorentz-Einstein space-time transformations as well as transformations for electric and magnetic fields and charge density are derived from retarded integrals for electric and magnetic fields. The derivation shows that the theory of retarded electromagnetic fields and relativistic electrodynamics, although very different in their mathematical formulations, are very closely related in their basic physical content. On the basis of this derivation a novel method for introducing relativistic electrodynamics in courses on electricity and magnetism is suggested.
