Search for the Top Quark in the Muon + Jets Channel at D0
Abstract
A search was performed for minimal Standard Model top quark pair production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV using the DO detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. A total of 11.0 +/- 1.3 pb^{-1 } of data was examined for events containing one isolated high transverse momentum muon accompanied by four or more particle jets. A topological cut was applied to the spatial distribution of jets within each event to enhance the signal to noise ratio above the predominant background of direct W production accompanied by jets. Consistent with background calculations, no events were observed. In combination with other DO top quark analyses, this work yielded a lower limit for the top quark of 131 GeV/c ^2 at 95% confidence level.
