Numerical Simulation of (1) Transitional Pipe Flow and (2) a Viscous Jet
Abstract
Transient growth mechanisms are investigated for both linear and nonlinear disturbances for the case of fluid flow in a circular pipe of infinite streamwise extent. The resulting growth gives rise to the initial stages of pipe flow transition and the data computed via direct simulation of the governing equations are found to be in good agreement with experimental data for the Reynolds numbers considered. Also, a new method for the computer simulation of a viscous incompressible jet in the far downstream region is proposed and outlined.
