Extended red emission in the nova QV Vul.
Abstract
We report the detection of extended red emission (ERE) in an optical spectrum of the classical nova QV Vul (Nova Vul 1987), 2084 d after visual maximum. This is the first time that ERE has been found in a classical nova. The presence of ERE in the late decline of a dusty nova is consistent with photoluminescence from hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC). We also estimate certain key elemental abundance ratios, and find that helium is overabundant, and nitrogen, carbon and oxygen underabundant, compared with many other novae. Key words: circumstellar matter - stars: individual: QV Vul - novae, cataclysmic variables.
