Compact radio cores in radio galaxies.
Abstract
A sample of 175 extended southern radio sources was searched for compact core components using the Parkes-Tidbinbilla Interferometer (PTI) at 2.3 GHz (with resolution 100 mas) and 8.4 GHz (30 mas). The sample included sources south of declination -30^deg^ and larger than 0.5 arcmin selected from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue (MRC) and confirmed by images at 843 MHz. Core emission was detected from 72 sources and upper limits were set for the others at one or both frequencies. The short observations reveal some unusual sources and also give statistical properties of the sample. The ratio of core flux to total flux has a median value of 0.4 per cent and tends to decrease in the stronger sources: that is, the core power increases in more luminous sources but not in proportion to the total power.
