EGRET observations of the interstellar clouds in Ophiuchus: a reassessment of COS-B source 2CG 353+16.
Abstract
Cosmic-ray matter interactions in the Ophiuchus complex of interstellar clouds have been studied using EGRET observations of diffuse, high energy γ-ray emission. The complex of clouds in Ophiuchus was one of only two diffuse sources detected by COS-B (2CG 353+16) and early analyses indicated that the density of cosmic rays in Ophiuchus, only ≡125 pc distant, might be as much as 3 - 10 times greater than the average density in the solar neighborhood.
