A design-to-cost methodology for rocket engine advanced projects
Abstract
The cost of the propulsion function of the Ariane 5 launching system is discussed. A methodology is proposed which depends on cost drivers impacting costs of production, operation, and launch. Emphasis is given to cryogenic propulsion systems. The choice of components is guided by a tradeoff between performance, mass, and production costs among other criteria. A functional analysis is applied to the different engine subsystems, evaluating the relative importance of the engine main functions and determining their costs.
