The ADS is a client-server based data retrieval system. It provides unified access to astronomical and astrophysics data located at various data centers/nodes. The data are located at, and maintained by the nodes. This ensures that they remain where the expertise for these data is located. The users can select and retrieve subsets of these data in real time and transfer them to their local workstations for data analysis. This greatly facilitates multi-wavelength and interdisciplinary research. Access is provided to 195 catalogs. The ADS also provides other services useful to astronomers. Among these are access to NED and SIMBAD and a server for searching through the NASA RECON abstract data base with about 125000 astronomy and astrophysics abstracts.
