On the physical background of the VAN earthquake prediction method
Abstract
Seismic electric signals (SES) have been used as precursors of earthquakes for the VAN method of earthquake prediction in Greece. Its generation is theoretically expected from the thermodynamics of point defects in rock-forming minerals. This paper reviews the theoretical and observational basis of the VAN method and points out several unsolved problems in its physical background. The problems can be classified into three: source energetics, signal generation mechanism and signal transmission. Further investigations on the geological and geoelectrical structure, laboratory experiments and theoretical aspects are recommended to solve these problems and to establish a better understanding of the physics of the focal process.
