Photographic and visual observations of the Geminid meteor shower in 1990
Abstract
The Geminids were favourably placed with respect to moonlight in 1990, when clear skies over much of the British Isles allowed coverage of the maximum period. An average ZHR of 89.1 +/- 4.2 was found in the hours around the expected Dec 14.1 maximum. Geminid meteors were, on average, slightly brighter than the sporadic background. The usual relatively small proportion of Geminids leaving persistent trains was noted. Photographic observations allowed assessment of rates for brighter meteors, which appear to have peaked in the morning hours of Dec 14. An accurate determination of the radiant position has been attempted using the photographic results. In addition to discussing these features, this paper set out the methods of photographic analysis to be used as a future standard by the Meteor Section.
