Smart spatial light modulators using liquid crystals on silicon
Abstract
In this paper we review work in liquid crystal (LC) on silicon 'smart' spatial light modulators. These devices use nematic and chiral smectic LC electrooptic materials in direct contact with silicon integrated circuits, which may contain photodetectors, amplifiers, and memory elements. Recent results describe a VLSI/LC spatial light modulator with 128 x 128 pixels operating at 5.0 KHz with 8:1 contrast ratio measured on a row of fifty pixels.
