Hard X-Rays from the Orion Nebula Region
Abstract
Ginga observations of hard X-rays from the Orion Nebula region are reported. The X-rays are associated with a small region near the Orion Trapezium and a more extended region around the Orion Nebula. The X-ray spectra from these two regions are represented by thermal bremsstrahlung models with an iron emission line at 6.7 keV. The temperature and luminosity in the 2-10 keV band from the Trapezium region are 2-3 keV and about 10 exp 33 erg/s, respectively. Intensity variations of about 10 percent amplitude with a time scale of about 10,000 s were found. Therefore, a significant fraction of the X-ray flux is due to a point-source, possibly from the massive young star Theta(1) Ori C. The spatial distribution of the more extended region has an angular size of 2.6 deg (FWHM) and is similar to the distribution of H-alpha emission-line stars.
