First Results from the Compton Observatory
Abstract
The first observations of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with the Comptel (Compton Telescope) and Egret (a spark chamber experiment) instruments aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory are reviewed. Comptel detected the quasar 3C 273 in the energy range from 1 MeV to 30 MeV. A new discovery in the energy range greater than 30 MeV is the detection of the optically violent variable quasar 3C 279 by Egeret. Although 3C 279 is a very strong source in the 0.5 to 50 GeV range it is not strong in the 1 to 30 MeV band. Jet models which include gama to gamma attenuation are possibly able to represent the observed data.
