Star formation in spiral arms of M 31
Abstract
Massive star formation efficiency (SFE) in the arms near the major axis of M 31 and the SFE in interarm space are compared. Existing data on the diameters of H II regions and on the surface density of atomic hydrogen are used. Statistical tests are applied, showing that the SFE in the arms of the southern part of M 31 is greater, perhaps only in the S4 arm, than in interarm space.
