a Compensated Penning Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer
Abstract
The design and construction of a cryogenic Penning ion trap mass spectrometer is described. Novel features include superconducting detection electronics and a trap constructed from a zero magnetic susceptibility alloy. Preliminary measurements using this trap are presented, verifying most theoretical aspects of the trap electrostatics, as well as a single ion S/N ratio in the trap in excess of 10 at one second.
