Abstract
Recently Udagawa, Hong, and Osterfeld proposed a very effective approach for the investigation of delta (Delta) excitations in nuclei induced by intermediate energy charge exchange, i.e., (p,n) and (^3 He,t), reactions. The approach is based on the isobar-hole model which explicitly treats the dynamics of the Delta in the nucleus including the Delta-hole correlations. The Lanczos method is subsequently used to expedite the process of solving the coupled channel (CC) equations. In this dissertation, the approach is modified to include the nucleon-hole degree of freedom and applied to the quasi-elastic region in (p,n) reactions. Then the approach is further extended and applied to the electron scattering, i.e., (e,e^') reaction, in both the quasi-elastic and delta resonance regions. It is found that the approach proves to be effective in describing the (p,n) and (e,e^' ) reaction mechanisms in the intermediate energy regions. The exclusive cross sections are also calculated and discussed.
