Can shocks form in three-dimensional accreting flows?
Abstract
The parameter space in which both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric shocks might form in 3D flows around compact objects is examined. The results of Chakrabarti (1990) in 2.5 dimensions are analyzed to show that self-similar spiral shocks should not form for gamma of not greater than 1.16 in polytropic disks. There is no such restriction in the formation of axisymmetric shocks.
