Secular variations of the Martian magnetic field?
Abstract
The most substantiated values of the magnetic moments of Mars compared to all previous estimates are presented. A 10 percent decrease is found in the dipole moment of Mars over the past 17 yr. The variability of the Martian magnetic moment and the proximity of the dipole axis to the axis of rotation suggests that the observed Martian field is associated with the dynamo process occurring in the modern epoch in the planet's liquid conducting core.
