Complexities of counter equatorial electrojet currents
Abstract
The characteristics of an unusual partial counter electrojet observed on 21 July 1976 are described by comparing the VHF backscatter radar signals, equatorial ionograms, surface magnetograms, and TEC measurements that day and neighboring quiet days. It is shown that the radar signals close to local noon hours exhibited characteristics in conflict with general expectations. This may be due to the strong influence of local scale irregularities at the appropriate ionospheric heights.
