Investigation of fine-scale aurora with the Freja electric field instrument.
Abstract
A description is given of the Freja double-probe electric field instrument and its capabilities to perform detailed high-resolution measurements of the aurora and the auroral fine structure in the dynamic transition region between the upper ionosphere and the innermost magnetosphere. The in situ electric field measurements, supplemented by magnetic field and particle observations will provide fundamental information not only on the acceleration mechanism itself, but also on the formation, energy transfer and current closure mechanisms of the different auroral structures.
