Cosmological applications of gravitational lensing.
Abstract
Recent research related to gravitational lenses is reviewed with reference to only those aspects of the subject that may have an impact on cosmology. First, the observational status of individual gravitational lenses is summarized, and the theoretical concepts used to understand the optics of lensing are briefly discussed. Attention is then given to the application of gravitational lenses to cosmography, inferences that can be drawn about the perturbing masses, deductions that can be made concerning the source structure, and future prospects for enlarging the sample of known lenses.
