Experimental Reaction Rates for the rp-Process
Abstract
A reliable interpretation and understanding of the nucleosynthesis and the reaction-flow in the rp-process (Wallace and Woosley, 1981) requires a detailed knowledge of the involved reaction rates. This necessitates the measurement of proton capture rates on stable and unstable nuclei along the process path. Several proton capture reactions on stable target nuclei as (32) S, (36) Ar and (31) P have been investigated to study bottleneck reactions and reaction branchings at the rp-process path close to the line of stability. This is expected for low temperature conditions. At high temperatures the reaction path runs far off stability, this requires the mesurement of proton capture reactions on unstable nuclei. Indirect reaction studies allow the measurement of the nuclear structure of the compound nucleus and will yield information about level densities and resonance energies. To determine the resonance strength, however, radioactive beam studies or photodissociation mesasurements are necessary. The applicability, advantages and dissadvantages of both methods will be discussed. Wallace, R.A., Woosley, S.E. 1981, Ap. J. Suppl. 45, 389
