Astrophysical Implications of the Direct Measurement of the 13/N/P, GAMMA/14/O Cross-Section
Abstract
The first direct measurement of the 13N(p,γ)14O cross section at energies of astrophysical interest has been successfully conducted at the Louvain-la-Neuve cyclotron facility using an intense and highly purified 13N beam (Decrock et al. 1991). From this pioneering experiment, a partial γ-width Γγ = 3.8 ± 1.2 eV has been deduced for the astrophysically dominant resonance in 14O at a centre of mass energy of 0.545 MeV. We discuss in this paper the impact of the corresponding new reaction rate on the conditions of development of the hot CNO mode of hydrogen burning, on the nucleosynthesis in novae, and on the s-process of nucleosynthesis in a variety of stellar environments where the necessary neutrons can be produced via 13C(α,n)16O.
