Is NGC 931 (Markarian 1050) a barred galaxy ?
Abstract
The velocity field of the ionized gas in the galaxy NGC931 (Mk 1040) has been observed with the CIGALE instrument at the prime focus of the SAO 6 m telescope. An azimuthal asymmetry of the velocities is observed in the disk of the galaxy, indicating large deviations from pure circular motions. This asymmetry is typical of the perturbations induced by a massive bar about 20 kpc long. This bar is not seen on classical red or blue photographs which may be explained by absorption because of the strong inclination of the galactic disk.
