Galaxy classification using pattern recognition methods.
Abstract
Numerous galaxies have to be archived including general properties as the morphological type. In the past, the determination of galaxies' type was done by eye, which is a slow and subjective procedure. Reliable automatic classification systems would be a useful support to improve objectivity. Here we examine whether the analysis of the distribution of H II regions via pattern recognition methods can extract information which correlates with morphological type. We will describe how to amplify this information by filtering the original image and how to use the improved information for classification. As will be discussed, the exactness of the classification depends on the detail of the input image. Although our method is applied only to the H II distribution, this type of method can easily be transformed for use with other data.
