Critical configurations of systems subjected to wide-band excitation
Abstract
The relationships between the parameters of a structural system and its wideband response are explored. The goal is to identify and characterize critical system configurations for which the response may become highly sensitive to small parameter variations. Such configurations are useful in design applications since minor modification of the system may lead to a significant reduction in response. The investigation, which centers on an examination of analytical expressions for the modal properties and mean-square response, shows that critical systems can be identified with modal curve veering phenomena.
