We have developed novel applications of ultrasound for the inspection of high quality silicon nitride parts. Techniques have been developed to image surface and near surface flaws using mode-converted surface waves on hipped parts, to overcome refractive errors and inspect for internal flaws in hipped parts, and to inspect porous green ceramic parts without exposing them to liquids. The strengths and weaknesses of each inspection technique are discussed, and detectable flaw sizes for each modality are presented.
