Intersymbol interference effects in digital matched filters
Abstract
The performance of digital matched filters is evaluated in the presence of intersymbol interference and loss of desired signal energy caused by prefiltering. The optimum filter, in a probability of error sense, is sought with regards to filter bandwidth and number of samples per symbol. The degradation factor, based on average error probability, is derived for some common lowpass filter characteristics. It is shown that previous methods are ill-suited to the problem. In some cases, improvement over previous methods is as much as 2 dB when the analogue matched filter is used as a basis for comparison.
