Flow equations for a model gas with shear and pressure viscosity
Abstract
The classical kinetic gas model and a new method for calculating molecular transport phenomena are used here to obtain a common derivation of the shear and bulk viscosity of a gas. The two viscosity coefficients in the Cauchy Poisson equation are equal regardless of the characteristics of the gas model. In contrast to pure shear damping, sound absorption is found to increase with the introduction of bulk viscosity.
