Inclusive and Exclusive Decays of B Mesons to D and d* Mesons
Abstract
The decays of B mesons to D^0, D^{+}, and D^ {*+} mesons have been studied using data obtained with the CLEO detector. Fully reconstructed B decays to a D or D^{*} and one, two, or three charged pions are used to provide new measurements of the branching ratios of these decay modes which include the first observation of | B^0 to D^ {+}pi^{-}pi^ {+}pi^{-} and B ^{-} to D^0pi^-pi^+pi ^-. Parameters of a theory of B decay are derived from the measurements of branching ratios in two -body decay modes. The mass of the | B ^0 is measured to be 5278.0 +/- 0.4 +/- 2.0 MeV, and the mass of B^- is measured to be 5278.3 +/- 0.4 +/- 2.0 MeV. The mass difference between | B^0 and B^- is then -0.4 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.5 MeV. New measurements of the inclusive branching ratios and the momentum spectra for D^0 , D^{+}, and D ^{*+} mesons produced in B decay, including the first measurement of D^ {*+} polarization in inclusive B decays as a function of momentum, are reported. The spectra and branching ratios are compared to theoretical predictions.
