X-ray images of supernova 1987A field. ART-P/ "GRANAT" observations in 1990.
Abstract
Results of the SN 1987A field X-ray observations with the ART-P imaging telescope aboard the Granat satellite in 1990 are presented. The upper limit of 0.65 mCrab on the SN 1987A 3-15 keV flux was found. Only two sources, LMC X-1 and PSR 0540-693, were detected in the 3.4 x 3.6-deg instrument field of view. Consideration is given to the nature of the supernova remnant formation. The source of hard X-ray radiation associated with the decay of radioactive Co-56 in the envelope, which was observed from 1987 to 1989 aboard the Kvant module, has in effect gone out. It is shown that over 70 percent of the remnant luminosity is converted in the cloud into thermal submillimeter radiation of the supernova.
